Being strong by being Quiet

Every book is an insight into someone’s soul, a lifetime of discovery condensed into an easily digestible format. Yet not all books are created equal. Most books touch you but very few can be termed as profound. One such profound book that I read recently was Quiet: The power of introverts by Susan Cain. It touched something inside me and turned a life knob or something. I see the world very differently after having read this book.

Take a moment and imagine some of the things we do every day: speak up, speak out, push back, write about achievements, advertise our work, evangelize things we believe one. There is a common thread that binds all these behaviors: they are all extrovert behaviors to a certain degree.

Why is everything (stocks, ETF, crypto, asset prices) going up?

Lately, everything I look at is going up. I look at stocks of tech companies in US and they are going up. I look at various stock market exchange indexes and they are going up, both in India and in US at least. Crypto-currencies are going up for the last year or so. And not just up, some of these assets are going up in a crazy fashion, doubling 10x in a year. It was becoming hard for me to even understand what I was doing and made investing even more risky.

For a long period of time, until recently, I used to believe that net result of every transaction is 0. If you are spending money, someone is earning money. So if you make money in the stock market, someone should be losing money. That is what the conventional wisdom in my head said. Continue reading

To crave or not to crave

It is quite likely that in the last hour you craved momentarily for something or someone or a feeling. It usually hits us out of the blue, sometimes lasting for one moment while at other times it lingers on. It could be a feeling of intense desire, it could be that sudden hunger for ice cream or it could be the strong urge to buy that phone.

Craving is defined as great or eager desire; yearning in Dictionary. Some of the common ways to describe a craving include using words like hunger, lust, urge, need etc. However I have been wondering on whether craving is a good thing or a bad thing.

Humans: The only storytellers

About a month ago I got a chance to read a very interesting book called Sapiens. It was written by a historian and it was one of the most thought provoking books I have had a chance to read. I rarely read non-fiction but history interests me somewhat. This book was more of a mashup between human history and psychology. It’s goal in a way was to write an unbiased history of the Homo genus, more specifically the Homo sapiens species. That, btw, is modern human beings

What really caught my attention was a very obscure fact. The brain matter of another human species, Neanderthals, was bigger than homo sapiens. Yet that specie died out and never developed civilization and sophisticated tools etc. For all of my life, I had assumed that humans are special because we have more brain matter. However I was clearly wrong.

Selfishness and Compassion

According to Oxford Dictionary, Selfishness is the quality of being Selfish. As per the same dictionary, a selfish person is concerned chiefly with one’s own personal profit or pleasure. Searching the same for Compassion shows is explained as sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. These do seem to be exact opposite. I always felt so too. But somewhere inside me there was this thought that the two can co-exist.

So can two opposite things exist together? They can. But then I wondered about how things in life seem circular or cyclic. If there are 2 things on 2 ends of a straight line and then you bend that line in a circle, they become the same thing. And when 2 ends meet, they become the whole. A circle represents the complete.

Shadow at Night

I wrote this about a year back and found it recently under some old uncatalogued text files. I still wonder why I never came to put it up.

Its night, a decent one at that
And i am sitting by the water
There’s a shadow under my feet
And its shining bright tonight

There’s a reflection that bubbles up
And slowly dies away
Just when i try to catch it
Playfully it withers from me

Is Marriage the end of the world?

I feel like telling a story. A story that raises questions on our society.

Once upon a time in a long far away there lived a boy. Not much is known about his past except that he was raised a rich kids with his own luxuries, his unwillingness to work and wanting much. As he grew up all around him grew distant because we all need someone to talk to and he was shy and quiet. With time he started feeling as if he is the most lonely soul in the world.

Similarly once upon a time there was a little girl who was raised like a princess. She had dreams, desires and ambitions. She loved to dress, talk, dance and meet people. Somehow as destiny rolls out life it has its own plans and this simple cheerful bubbly girl was transformed into another lonely quiet soul who felt unwanted by the series of relationships she went through. At the end of each one, she was made to feel the wrong person, the unwanted one. And so her life went on.
