Can a single person change the world

Posted on June 7, 2009April 16, 2022 by pranay

I just dont know, what led to this thought. But it was in my head, one fine morning!! And it has made its presence felt now and then. If rephrased, can any person do something, so critical, however small it maybe, that it can impact the world.

Imagine a situation in which perhaps Osama Bin Laden had been in life threatening situation. And someone saved him. If that person had not, we would not have had 9/11 possibly. The Iraq war also and god knows what all would have happened and not have happened. But this is kind of secondary example.

A more fundamental question is Can a person’s single act, be a decisive turn in world history. Yes, i think it can. I just thought about Nikolas Tesla the other day. And had he not been there, perhaps electricity would have not been present in our society. He was one person, who did change the world.

But are we as an individual capable of changing the world. This is what i wonder, can i make a difference in the world. Can i make a difference in even one person’s life? Even if i do, would that person ever recognize, that i made a impact on his/her life. That has taken me to do a lot of soul-searching, and i dont have an answer.

For me, it feels, as if to be able to change / impact even one person’s life for better, is good enough work for a lifetime. Yet it does not feel right, if it is never recognized if not publicly, then even by the person. I really dont have a idea, if i have been a impact. But at times, i have definitely felt that yes i have done something for someone, and similarly felt, that YES, some person X has done something crucially important for me.

I try to remember all those people who have had a impact, and i wish to tell them so, when the perfect moment comes. But yes, i know people can change the world. If not everyone’s world, then even a single individual’s world. A phone call, a book gifted, a small walk, a kind gesture. Any of these, for me, can be life changing. I just wish sometimes, that people remember the same, that every act they do can change someone’s life.

And finally, can love change your life? I think, i can safely conclude, that yes it can. And it almost always does. For good or for bad, depends on the kind of love story it is. But yes, it can. So at least it should be given due respect.
