Self Discovery : Momentum

It was not while i was thinking for days in some remote location of the country that i came to this realisation. It just happened during a simple bike ride while coming back home. I have this habit of accelerating gradually, but never wanting to brake. And it was while i was cruising that i thought “Why, this is it”. This is what is required to keep the world functioning. MOMENTUM.

MOMENTUM.

And as i thought of this, things started making sense. The most difficult part is to get a machine moving, once it acquires momentum, rest is comparatively easy. And the biggest difficulty for the same machine is, when it stalls. When it stops operating.
Thats what it always is about. There is a gradual momentum build-up that takes the world forward. Think of it, just imagine, how our pace of growth has doubled trebled and what not. Why, because as we moved towards the 18th century and 19th, industrial revolution began in bits. It increased our momentum, and its own, and has continiously sped up. It was the momentum that sustained it.
I was thinking isnt energy important. But then had this flash, where there was a motor, given energy that it was disspating at heat or waste. There was no motion, no momentum. The motor appeared useless. Until there is a momentum, there is no way of moving. And it in itself takes us forward without the effort needed.
Think of the 2 co-efficient of friction. Why are there 2? One for static, and other for kinetic ( or whatever ) friction. It means that getting a body to move is the toughest. From rest to momentum is tough. Once a body acquires momentum, the rest is easy.
And what is man’s biggest challenge? To keep that momentum going. Not to let it stall. Because once it stops, it will take tremendous effort to get it to that state of momentum. We can look at the financial crisis, which stalled this momentum. The effort now is to get back, to regain the same momentum.
As i was going on the bike, a bicycle came into middle of the road. Suddenly. And i had to stop. To brake hard. And that is the toughest part. My momentum was lost. And then getting the bike back to same momentum needed time and effort. The same is with us, as people. We are always gaining or losing momentum, in life. In work. In emotions. And the same rules apply there.
And somehow, we have all known it. We mention the momentum is with some team, during a game like cricket. We say the stocks would rally due to the momentum they have built up. We say the storm has gathered momentum. Its like a natural principle that applies to all. And i just happened to realise, the truth.
